How to redeem an Xbox code

Go to xbox.com/redeem, sign in with your Microsoft account and enter the 25-character code. On the console, open the Store, press the View button and select Redeem. The code is added to the Microsoft account you are signed in with.

On your Xbox console

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide, then select Store.
  2. Press the View button to open the side menu, then select Redeem.
  3. Enter the 25-character code, select Next and follow the prompts.

You may be asked to add a payment method. You won't be charged.

In the Xbox app on Windows PC

  1. Press Start and search for Xbox.
  2. Open the Xbox app.
  3. Select your gamerpic, then Settings.
  4. Select Redeem under Redeem a code.
  5. Enter the code, select Next and follow the prompts.

In the Xbox mobile app

  1. Select your profile picture.
  2. Select the gear icon.
  3. Select Redeem code.
  4. Enter the code, then select Next.

In your browser

  1. Go to xbox.com/redeem or redeem.microsoft.com.
  2. Sign in with your Microsoft account.
  3. Enter or paste the code.

Some codes look similar but are not Xbox codes, such as V-Bucks cards. Those are redeemed with the publisher.

If the code is invalid

Xbox codes have 25 characters in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. They never use the letters A, E, I, O, U, L or S, or the numbers 0, 1 or 5. If you typed one of those, check the code again.

If the code is already used or not active

Check whether you redeemed it with another Microsoft account. Xbox Support can't move a redeemed code.

Shops have to activate codes at the till. If a code still fails 24 hours after you bought it, go back to the retailer.

If the code is for another region

Some codes only work in one country or region, and your Microsoft account's region should match where you are. If the code doesn't match your account's region, contact the retailer.

Where do I redeem a Microsoft 365 or Windows key?

Not at xbox.com/redeem. Microsoft 365 and Office keys go to Office.com/setup. Windows keys go in Settings under Activation, with Change product key.
