Is Kinguin legit? What to know before you buy

Kinguin is a marketplace for game keys that has been operating since 2013 and is one of the largest in Europe. As on any marketplace, many independent merchants sell there. What decides whether a purchase goes smoothly is the seller, the key's region and the final price at checkout.

How Kinguin works

On Kinguin many different merchants offer the same title; Kinguin runs the platform and handles payment and delivery. The operator is Kinguin Digital Limited, based in Hong Kong.

Every offer shows the seller and their rating. The lowest price does not always come from the best-rated merchant, so it pays to compare two or three offers.

Fees: the price at checkout

Depending on the payment method, Kinguin adds a payment fee to the list price. Optional extras such as buyer protection are also offered at checkout and raise the final price.

Region and activation

Why are the prices so low?

Merchants buy keys during promotions, in bulk or in countries with lower prices and resell them at a small margin. Developers are critical of key marketplaces because they earn nothing from resales and the origin of individual keys cannot always be traced.
