Is G2A legit? What to know before you buy

G2A is a marketplace for digital game keys that has been operating since 2010, not a fake shop. Whether a single purchase goes well depends mostly on the individual seller and on picking the right offer. Check three things before you pay: the seller, the key's region and the final price at checkout.

How G2A works

G2A does not sell most keys itself. It runs the platform: retailers and private sellers list offers, and G2A handles payment and delivery. The operator is G2A.COM Limited, based in Hong Kong.

For you that means price, delivery time and the origin of a key depend on the individual seller. The offer page shows the seller's rating and number of sales. It is worth a look before you simply take the lowest price.

Fees: the price at checkout

The listed price on G2A is not always the final price. Depending on the payment method a service fee is added at checkout, and extras such as the G2A Plus subscription are offered there too.

Region and activation

Most problems with cheap keys are region problems: a key for Latin America or Asia often cannot be activated on a European account. Look for the EU or Global label.

Key, gift or account

Besides classic keys, G2A also lists Steam gifts and accounts. You redeem a key directly in your own account. A gift is sent to you through Steam and is often tied to a region. An account is someone else's account with the game on it, which usually breaks the platforms' terms of service.

Why are the prices so low?

Sellers buy keys during promotions, in bulk or in countries with lower prices and resell them at a small margin. Developers are critical of key marketplaces because they earn nothing from resales and the origin of individual keys cannot always be traced.
